We are happy to invite you to 'New Kin', a solo exhibition by Raquel van Haver at raam art space Amsterdam, opening on May 29th.
In 'New Kin' Raquel van Haver brings Amsterdam into view through the people who shape it. From raam art space, overlooking the city itself, three monumental group portraits from her series The Collateral Kin unfold alongside twenty intimate portraits. Inspired by the tradition of 17th- and 18th-century civic guard paintings these works were first presented at the Amsterdam Museum as part of Amsterdam’s 750th anniversary. Van Haver turns the genre toward a different kind of public: not political elites or commissioners of power, but the activists, makers, thinkers, and neighbours who continue to shape the city today. Their presence was built through conversations and encounters in more than 150 interviews with Amsterdam residents. Each person portrayed carries a fragment of the city within them, together forming a collective portrait of the landscape they both inhabit and reshape. Seen together, they represent the city's voices, tensions, and solidarities, set against the skyline of Amsterdam just beyond the windows.
Join us for the opening and experience Van Haver’s powerful reimagining of the civic portrait, where community, activism, and lived experience take centre stage.
