About
Marie Reintjes (1990) paints abstract interpretations of landscapes and urban scenes, done in simple compositions using exceptionally simple brushstrokes. With just a few movements, she compresses the depth of the space into two dimensions. Her paintings’ strength lies in her quiet evocation of atmosphere and place and an almost cinematic poetics. There is no doubt that we are looking at a painting. There is no illusion of space or of reality, and yet the way it is worked, the use of photographically composed segments of reality, is so intense that our mind completes the image, the atmosphere of which is formed by the combination of this sketched information with our visual knowledge and expectations.
